Dentures

Dentures are removable prosthetic devices designed to replace missing teeth and surrounding tissues. They are commonly used when individuals have lost natural teeth due to factors such as aging, decay, gum disease, or injury. Dentures serve both functional and aesthetic purposes, allowing people to regain the ability to chew, speak, and smile confidently.

There are two main types of dentures:

  1. Complete Dentures:

    • Full Dentures: These replace all of the teeth in either the upper or lower jaw, or both.
    • Immediate Dentures: These are placed immediately after the removal of natural teeth, allowing the individual to have teeth right away. However, adjustments may be needed as the gums heal and change shape.
  2. Partial Dentures:

    • These are used when some natural teeth remain. They consist of replacement teeth attached to a pink or gum-colored base, which is often connected by a metal framework.

The process of getting dentures typically involves several steps:

  • Initial Consultation: A dentist assesses the oral health, takes impressions, and discusses the appropriate type of denture.

  • Modeling: Based on impressions, a model of the denture is created to ensure proper fit and function.

  • Trial Fitting: A trial denture is fitted to ensure comfort, functionality, and aesthetics. Adjustments are made as needed.

  • Final Fitting: Once adjustments are complete, the final denture is provided. Regular check-ups may be necessary to address any changes in the oral structure or denture fit.

Dentures require proper care to maintain oral health and extend their lifespan. Regular cleaning, removal during sleep, and periodic check-ups with a dentist are essential for optimal denture maintenance. Additionally, adjustments or relining may be necessary over time due to changes in the jaw and gum tissues.
